Set within the Volkswagen Autostadt brand park, the pavilion features a 25m cube of glass and steel. The choreographed mechanised louvres open and shut to reveal a shimmering 18m sphere apparently floating. On entering the experience, the audience are immersed in light show projected on the outer sphere and an array of screens that explore the 'Spirit of evolution' within nature.
Within the sphere auditorium, a 360º film translates Volkswagen’s ’Spirit of Evolution’ into human terms – the quest for the individual to improve through practise and dedication, a metaphor for the company’s own philosophy of change through evolution.
This project is really a testament to 'where there is a will, there is a way' philosophy of the brilliant Mr John Furneaux. I have never worked on a project before or since, where the overwhelming consensus from most of the expert consultants was 'it can't be done'... but with dogged perseverance from a master helmsman, it was done! It was also the first time I was introduced to the word 'Terabyte' (in the year 2000AD by the equally brilliant Mr Ian Dall), a word that singularly threw fear into the eyes of the software team making their zip drives tremble.
