Qasr Al Muwaiji is a historic fort built in the early 20th century and the birthplace of HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE. The exhibition is housed within a super modern glass walled architectural envelope that offers views around the entire courtyard. This transparent aesthetic was also adopted to celebrate the century long story of the fort and the life of Sheikh Khalifa with the main exhibition displayed on suspended glass showcases. Mixed media within the showcases allows the journey to be explored but with an ever present backdrop of the historical fort.
I remember the first meeting the fantastic Katie Viera and I had with the client, where he warned, 'be careful what you wish for'. Those words resonated so loudly a year later in the sleepless nights of thinking about glass, glass and only glass... possibly the most complex substrate I've ever had the pleasure to bore friends senselessly about, with the exception of Andy Kemp who diligently crafted each and every multi layered pane.
